As one of Turkey’s most popular cruise destinations, Bodrum welcomes a steady stream of cruise visitors throughout the summer months, most of whom spend only a day or half-day in the city. The most time-efficient way to take in the highlights is on a guided tour and there are a number of shore excursions in Bodrum for cruise visitors that guarantee on-time return to your ship.
Cruise ships dock at the Bodrum Cruise Port on the outskirts of town, from where it’s possible to walk to the centre of town (around 30 minutes), but most cruise liners offer a complimentary shuttle service to take passengers downtown. The obvious starting point for a walking tour is the seafront Castle of St. Peter, which offers dramatic views from its cliff-top perch, as well as housing an impressive Bronze Age shipwreck in the onsite Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
From here, take a scenic stroll around the harbour, stopping to admire the boats in the Bodrum Marina or dine at one of the many seafront cafes and restaurants. A short walk from the marina is the Myndos Gate and the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, famously one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. History buffs will also want to tag on a visit to the hillside Bodrum Amphitheatre, which dates back to the fourth century B.C.
Another popular activity in Bodrum is taking a cruise around the Bodrum Peninsula on a gulet, a traditional Turkish sailing ship, but if you prefer to stay on dry land, make a beeline for the beach, where swimming, snorkeling and windsurfing are popular activities.
